4 Battery Maintenance Tips for Your Diesel Truck

4 Battery Maintenance Tips for Your Diesel Truck

Maintenance is essential for your vehicle, but many people tend to overlook battery maintenance. However, battery maintenance shouldn't be ignored, as it is a vital part of your vehicle. A battery that has been improperly cared for can lead to bad alternators and starters. Thankfully, you can dedicate yourself to ensuring your next battery stays strong for life by utilizing the four following maintenance tips.

Refill Your Water Levels

You must keep your battery filled with the right amount of water to allow the electricity to flow through the cells properly. To do so, open the caps on top of your battery and peer down into the cylinders to check the water level. If you need to top off the battery, pour distilled water to the fill lines and replace the caps on top.

Keep Those Terminals Clean

Battery corrosion impedes the connection between the terminals and cables, causing those components to fail to function properly and even prematurely wear. You can clean off your terminals upon noticing excessive corrosion by using a mixture of baking soda and water. Take the terminals off the battery posts and scrub both components clean by using a wire brush dipped in your baking soda and water mixture.

If you do not select the right battery type for your vehicle, the starting power will decrease over time and eventually leave you stranded. When selecting a battery, you must look at the cranking amps and cold cranking amps to find the right configuration.

Maintain a Great Charge Strength

To keep your battery strong for life, avoid running it down unnecessarily without the alternator feeding its cells with power. You should always run your radio, and other fun accessories with your ignition turned to accessory mode. Furthermore, have your battery checked on a regular basis to verify that it continues to produce enough power to start up your diesel engine time and time again.

Choose the Right Battery

If you do not select the right battery type for your vehicle, the starting power will decrease over time and eventually leave you stranded. When selecting a battery, you must look at the cranking amps and cold cranking amps to find the right configuration.

If you live in a cold climate, you should have a battery with a higher cold cranking amp rating than average. The cold cranking amps allow your diesel truck to start up quickly even as the temperature outside drops below freezing. If you live in a moderate or warm climate, you only have to select a battery with the cranking amps required for your diesel engine size.
