Clearing Up Common Misconceptions About Diesel Engines

Clearing Up Common Misconceptions About Diesel Engines

There is a lot of misinformation out there about diesel engines, much of which can discourage people from purchasing diesel trucks. However, there is no need to be scared off from getting this type of truck. Here are some of the most common myths that exist around diesel and why they are just not true.

Myth #1 - Diesel is Dirty

In the past, diesel engines were often associated with horrible plumes of black smoke and foul-smelling exhaust. With the growing focus on global warming, it is no wonder that many people are turned off from diesel engines because of this myth. However, in recent decades, regulations regarding emissions have gotten more and more strict. The result is that modern diesel engines are cleaner than ever before.

Myth #2 - Diesel Engines Won't Start in Cold Weather

This is another myth that has persisted from decades past. The truth of the matter is that diesel fuel congeals at temperatures of 40 degrees Fahrenheit and below, which can make it difficult to get the fuel ignited to start the engine. However, modern innovations, such as glow plugs, have all but eliminated this issue. Unless you live somewhere that experiences temperatures below freezing all the time, you are unlikely to have a problem.

Myth #3 - Diesel Pumps are Hard to Find

It is unclear how this myth has retained its popular belief because it is just not true. As diesel engines have grown in popularity over the years, gas stations have taken notice. These days, just about every gas station has diesel pumps. The only time that this could be an issue would be on long road trips through vastly unpopulated areas. However, careful planning will eliminate this issue, and you should never have a problem in developed areas.

Although it is true that diesel fuel typically costs slightly more than standard unleaded gasoline, the difference is not significant. In many cases, the premium gasoline may be more expensive than the diesel.

Myth #4 - Diesel Fuel is Expensive

Although it is true that diesel fuel typically costs slightly more than standard unleaded gasoline, the difference is not significant. In many cases, the premium gasoline may be more expensive than the diesel. In fact, diesel engines tend to get better gas mileage than their gasoline counterparts. Because of this, you can save a lot of money in the long run when you need to fill up less frequently.
