Tips and Tricks to Help Your Diesel Live Longer

Tips and Tricks to Help Your Diesel Live Longer

What determines how long a diesel engine lasts? It's all about maintenance. With a diesel engine, you get out of it what you put into it. The better you maintain it, the more likely it is to last you a long time. But how do you properly maintain a diesel engine? Here are a few important tips and tricks.

Conduct Your Regular Maintenance Checks

  • Regularly replace your air filters. If you don't change your air filters, your engine as a whole has to work harder. The harder your engine has to work, the more likely it is to fail eventually. Changing your air filters should be done as a part of regular maintenance.
  • Change your oil as recommended. Just like a gas-powered engine, a diesel engine requires regular oil changes. Many vehicles will need changes anywhere from every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, but your service station can give you more specific information.
  • Follow your servicing schedule. Your service station will be able to give you a servicing schedule that you should adhere to. Diesel engines are very different from a gas-powered engine; maintaining each part, keeping the engine lubricated and keeping the fluids filled are all important. You may also want to conduct seasonal checks to prepare for the changing weather.

  • Don't idle your engine. A diesel engine is intended to get up and go; it isn't meant to idle. Though you can safely idle a gas-powered car, it just contributes to extra wear with a diesel vehicle. Any time you're not doing anything, you should turn off your pickup and wait.
  • Learn to inspect your truck. Though you may not need to work on your truck on your own, and it may not necessarily be desirable, it's a good idea to at least learn about the parts of your engine and how to inspect your vehicle. Diesel engines can be fairly simple, at least in terms of determining which parts aren't working and which parts need to be replaced.
  • Be aware of your engine's limitations. Every engine has a certain amount of power behind it. Know how much torque and acceleration your diesel vehicle has and do your best not to exceed this when towing and pulling. Pushing your diesel engine could cause serious damage.

Through a combination of changing your driving habits and completing your routine maintenance, you should be able to keep your diesel engine working perfectly for years. Not only is diesel maintenance important for performance, but neglecting it can eventually lead to costly repairs. For more information, contact us at Bodacious Diesel today.
